Backpack Baby Carrier Cautions To Take

Backpack Carrier Cautions To Take

When using a backpack carrier, follow these safety tips:

Buckle and tighten all straps at all times so that your child isn't tempted to climb out when you're on the go. Serious injuries, including skull fractures and concussions, can occur when children fall from carriers.

Keep your baby's fingers away from the frame joints, especially when you're folding the backpack.

Check on your child from time to time. Children can become overheated in warm weather or be exposed to harmful rays from the sun. See that your child's legs and arms are secure in the leg and arm openings, but also that his circulation isn't impaired in any way.

Be sure buckles, snaps, straps, and adjustments are secure before each use. Snaps can open and adjustments may be maladjusted, which pose safety hazards.

Check the backpack periodically for ripped seams, missing or loose fasteners, and frayed seats or straps. Stop using a carrier with frayed seams, which can give way suddenly.

Bend your knees, not at your waist, to keep your baby from falling out when you're leaning over or reaching for something low.

Never carry the child in a pack while in a moving vehicle or on an airplane, and never use the carrier as a substitute for a certified child car seat. When you're traveling by car or plane, always secure your child in the appropriate car seat.

Don't leave your child unattended in a backpack carrier. Your child shouldn't be in a carrier unless the pack is on your back. Don't place your baby in a backpack carrier and then perch her on a kitchen counter or couch, bed or picnic table, even for a moment. Babies can fall or suffocate much faster than you'd think.

Backpack Baby Carrier Basics

Backpack Baby Carrier Basics

A backpack carrier lets you travel in ways you never thought possible with a baby, including rugged, backcountry hiking and snow shoeing. But it can also be used for smaller, less exotic trips to the mall, the zoo, or even Disney World. Thinking about getting a carrier? Here are five things to keep in mind before and while you’re shopping.

Hold off on this purchase. If your baby is a newborn, there’s no need to buy a carrier just yet. Backpack carriers are intended for children old enough to sit up independently--usually at least 6 months old--up to 40 pounds, plus 10 pounds of gear, depending on the model. The weight of the pack itself can add another 4 to 7 pounds to your load, so consider that when choosing a pack. A heavy carrier might make it more difficult to carry your child.

Bring your baby. When your baby is about 6 months old, take her with you when you’re shopping for a backpack carrier and if your child is game, do test runs in the store to try on carriers for size, fit and comfort. If you expect to be wearing them during colder months, try a backpack with a coat on and your child.

Practice, practice. With the help of a knowledgeable salesperson, try putting the carrier on and taking it off. Have your spouse do likewise to make sure it fits you both comfortably. If you and your spouse will be switching the pack back and forth, adjust the straps to fit your torso so you can see if it’s easy to do (or not). Walk with the backpack to be sure the frame doesn’t hit the back of your head, that it’s not too long for your height, that the straps fit properly so they won’t slip off your shoulders, and that the frame doesn’t start to dig into your lower back after a few minutes. You should be able to walk comfortably with your arms at your sides and carrier directions should be easy to follow.

Look for a snug-fitting safety harness. The safest backpack carriers have a harness for the child that connects the shoulder straps with the crotch, torso, and hip restraints for a snug fit.

Be wary of second-hand equipment. A backpack carrier is something many parents pick up at tag sales. If you decide to buy used, check for recalled brands at the www.cpsc.gov. Inspect carriers for excessive wear, which can dangerously weaken straps and seams.

Before buying a backpack carrier, think about how much you'll use it. That will help you determine what to spend. Price, however, isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of quality. Our top-rated model, the Snugli Cross Country, for example, cost $70, compared to the lowest-rated model, Chicco's Smart Support, which retails for approximately $95. Consider sharing with neighbors if you expect to use a backpack carrier only occasionally. If you plan longer or more frequent outings with your baby, consider models that will have more storage features, better padding, and a more comfortable fit.

As we mentioned, don't use a backpack carrier until your child can sit up unassisted (usually at 6 months) and has full head control. And even though a child carrier can give you the freedom to venture where a stroller can't, don't use one in areas where you won't have firm footing, such as hiking on wet rocks, big boulders, icy terrain, or wet, leafy trails. Many children are injured when adults fall. Also, don't leave your child unattended while he's in the carrier, use the carrier as a seat, or put it on an elevated surface, such as a table or bench, with your child in it, even for a minute. And check on your child periodically as you're walking to make sure he's still comfortable and secure. Before you venture out, become familiar with your backpack carrier. If the directions are unclear about, for example, how to secure your child in a carrier seat, how to use a carrier seat's lap belt, or assemble an accessory, such as a rain hood, call the manufacturer. Don't wing it. Unclear directions and a lack of understanding can be dangerous since both you and your child's safety depend on setting up a backpack carrier and adjusting the straps properly. Be sure to send in the registration card so you'll be notified in the event of a recall.

Finally, before doing a lot of walking with a carrier, be in good physical shape. It's easy to underestimate, but you'll need a strong back, hips and quadriceps to lug around a baby. Stay within the recommended weight limits. When your child outgrows the backpack carrier, stop using it.

RES-Q Infant Wedge. Reversible Reflux Wedge for Babies

RES-Q Infant Wedge and Sling. Reversible Reflux Wedge for Babies

The RES-Q Wedge is the only orthopedic and reversible reflux wedge on the market designed by an occupational therapist, physician and dietician. Read the fascinating story of how and why the wedge was developed at the following site:
http://occupational-therapy.advanceweb.com/common/Editorial/Editorial.aspx?CC=58148

The RES-Q Infant Wedge ( R = reflux symptoms, E = ear infections, S = sleep disturbance, and Q = quick relief)

The RES-Q Wedge is is a washable and reusable vinyl-covered foam wedge used for the management of infant reflux. Orthopedically designed, the wedge helps bring the shoulders slightly forward while providing good head molding. In addition, it helps place the cervical spine in a natural position. The wedge is also reversible. One side is designed like a parent's chest and is for "tummy time" to help strengthen muscles for gross motor skills. The other side of the wedge has a scooped out "nest" that offers containment and boundaries for newborns in addition to nice head molding. The accompanying RES-Q Sling is secured to the wedge via Velcro straps that attach within a "slit" in the wedge. The sling is adjustable up and down the incline so that the infant can be placed in the optimum position for comfort.

RES-Q Infant Wedge & Sling

The RES-Q Infant Wedge/Sling is designed to allow babies with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Ear Infections, Upper Respiratory Congestion, and Sleep Disturbances to sleep comfortably in a semi-upright position.

The wedge is constructed at a 30° angle, which is standard reflux protocol. The RES-Q Infant Wedge is currently used in hospitals and is now available for private home use. The Wedge/Sling allows babies with reflux to achieve a restful sleep state - parents will also appreciate the benefits of a well rested infant!

The RES-Q Infant Wedge design is unique because it enhances proper musculoskeletal alignment and head molding while providing a nest-like haven, unlike other commercial wedges. The RES-Q Sling comes in 3 sizes and will accommodate babies weighing from 3 to 18 pounds (1.36 to 8.18 kilos).

Maya Wrap Adjustable Pouch Baby Sling Wrap Review

Maya Wrap Adjustable Pouch Baby Sling/Wrap Reviews
Great Baby Carrier For For Mom and Dads

Pros : color choice, washable, versatile, easily transported, light weight, breathable

Cons: none

The Bottom Line: The ease of use, durability, and versatility make this my new favorite carrier, and one I wish I had when my first child was born! A must have!

This is the easiest carrier to use! I have two of the regular sling Maya Wraps, and debated on whether or not to order a pouch, when I saw on the website that the company was working on an adjustable pouch. I knew it wouldn't be long before it would be available, so I held out and ordered one as soon as I could.

The adjustable pouch is based on the same concept as the original. It's a solid ring of fabric, and you put one side under one arm, and the other side on the other shoulder, with the open edges facing upward, and then rotate the pouch so the seam is positioned where you want baby's rear end to be. Then you just open the pouch and lay (or sit) your baby in it and go! It's that simple!

The new adjustable pouch differs from the traditional one in that it has zippers to adjust the fit. This is a nice feature, since not everyone is made the same, and this allows you to customize the fit of the pouch, although not to the extent that the Maya Wrap sling with tail offers.

The pouch is also versatile. It is convenient to nurse in, allows you to carry baby hands free, and you can also lay it down to use as a little blanket. It can be used to carry your baby in several positions, such as the newborn carry (baby lying down), baby facing in, baby facing out (kangaroo carry), hip carry, back carry, and necklace carry (where both ends of the pouch are over your shoulders, and none of the pouch is under your arms.)

I have used it with my two year old in the hip carry, and it was comfortable and easy. With my 2 month old daughter, I have only used it in the newborn carry, but plan on trying her in the kangaroo shortly.

The snug, dark, cozy pouch provides a womb like environment when worn close to mom (or dad) in that baby feels the motion of walking or rocking, and is near to mom (or dad's) scent and sounds. This can be very beneficial when attempting to calm a fussy baby, while saving your arms!

The carrier is made out of 100% cotton and is machine washable. It is best, however, to line dry to prevent shrinkage. There are many colors and patterns to choose from, and it's best to go to the website to see them, as they are labeled by number. The weight limit is 35 pounds, which allows it to be used for newborns (including preemies) to toddler. No buckles or straps mean no risk of the sling opening and falling off the wearer.

Another great feature is that it is easily transported. It can be folded up and put into a diaper bag, purse, or carried in the stroller basket. Many times I have kept it on even when not carrying my baby, since it is extremely light weight, breathable, and comfortable.

Babies love to be held close, and the Maya Wrap adjustable pouch gives moms and dads the chance to carry baby comfortably while also giving them freedom of mobility. However, caution should be taken as with any carrier, and it is not recommended that baby be worn in any carrier while cooking, driving, or during any other task which may pose possible risk to the infant. The pouch should not be left in the crib with baby.

"Sling Challenged"? Try the Pouch- Great for Late Walkers, Too!

Pros: Easy to use, super portable, washes well, quick on and off, suitable for both parents

Cons: As baby grows more active s/he may resist pouch's confines- start young!

The Bottom Line: Want to "wear" your child, even as s/he grows into toddlerhood? Frustrated by carriers that need constant adjusting? This high quality, easy to use pouch is for you!

First, let me specify that this review pertains to the Maya Wrap Pouch- not to be confused with the very prevalent Maya Wrap Sling.

My family and I LOVE our pouch! We had tried numerous slings and carriers (Baby Bjorn, Dr. Sears, Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, and others) with our daughter when she was an infant (she's now 4 1/2, and none of them were "right" for us. We always felt like we would drop her, or they were physically uncomfortable for us.We finally resigned ourselves to the fact that we'd have to carry our late-walking (she didn't walk until she was 16 months) and very heavy (almost 30 lbs. at a year old!) girl on our hips and just be thankful for a great daily bicep workout.

With our son (he'll be a year old in 2 weeks), we again tried the same parade of carriers, and still we weren't quite comfortable with any of them, so you know since we weren't, he definitely wasn't!

We were initially introduced to the Maya Wrap by trying their trademark sling carrier. It worked very well when our son (another BIG baby!) was only a few months old. As he grew, however, I began to get frustrated with the constant repositioning of the rings while juggling the big boy, and the ever present question of "What to do with that tail?!?!".

A few months ago, I decided to look further into the pouch, which I had seen on the website when I purchased the sling. I fell in love with the idea of a "ringless" yet adjustable carrier. The pouches come in sizes small, medium, large, and extra large. (I am 5'6" and selected a medium, which works great- I have room to adjust up or down, should it become necessary). When your pouch arrives, you select the appropriate length of pouch for you and your child by choosing one of 3 zipper options. The zipper sets the length by creating a horizontal pleat in the fabric that varies based on the location of the zipper, thus lengthening or shortening the pouch. The zippers are VERY high quality, and when a particular setting is not in use, the zipper "teeth" are securely covered in the soft yet very durable (and attractive!) cotton fabric, in order to protect your baby's soft skin. Once you've selected the length that works for you, THAT'S IT!!! (Until the baby grows, of course:) You can take the pouch on and off, and the setting stays exactly where you want it. No rings to dig into your shoulder (I know, I know, they aren't supposed to dig into my shoulder- I just never could get it right, even with the excellent video instructions), no constant adjusting of the tail, and never a need to re-thread the wrap through the rings- Get it, adjust it once, and that's it!

This carrier has been to museums, on Easter Egg Hunts, to birthday parties, shopping, around the yard, to playgrounds- road tested indoors and out. It has been indispensable for us, as we have an active 4 1/2 year-old who frequently needs a hand to hold. We can be right at our daughter's side without maneuvering a stroller through crowded areas, and our son is close to our faces- not staring at the legs of a crowd while down in his stroller. Our favorite position is to carry our son on our hip as we would w/o the pouch, but this lets us do it hands-free. There are at least 3 other positions to try with the pouch, including a back-carrying position that we're not ready for quite yet (again, my issue- not the baby's :).

The fabric is great, it washes very well (remember to line dry 100 % cotton!) and is breathable in even the warmest weather. The carrier can be used with babies/toddlers up to 35 pounds. The website states that the pouch zippers have been tested up to over 125 pounds, and if a zipper should ever malfunction, the pouch would never open- it would only extend to its largest setting.

I purchased the pouch "gently used". It cost $31.95, which is a substantial savings over the regular priced pouches, which range from $44.95-$49.95. The pouch was in new condition- not even the slightest sign of wear, even on the label! I was thrilled! And, even though it was a "used" model, it still came with the free instructional video. BTW, the video is great- take it from a teacher :) the instructions are simple and presented at a pace that is easy to follow.

Our son has just started crawling at almost a year- looks like we've got another late walker on our hands. This time, the pouch will spare our biceps (unless, of course, we need the workout!).

Breastfeeding and Babywearing For Slings, Wraps, Rings

Breastfeeding and Babywearing

One of the great advantages of being able to wear your baby in a sling or baby carrier is that you can nurse discretely and hands-free. You can nurse your baby in just about any carrier that allows you to carry your baby in the front of your body.

Some tips for nursing in a baby carrier or sling:

Try to keep your baby’s body and head in a straight line when nursing. Think about keeping your bodies stomach-to-stomach while nursing.

At home, practice nursing in your carrier without wearing a shirt. While out, try wearing nursing shirts or button-down shirts to avoid having to tuck and un-tuck your shirt from under the wrap.

Remember that your child will become more comfortable with nursing with practice and that babies are wonderful at using cues to tell you what they need. Some babies do not like the fabric over their heads while nursing. Some babies prefer to nurse in the upright position like the Hug Hold. Be patient and be willing to try different positions.

How to nurse your baby in a Ring Sling

Ring slings are my favorite kind of baby carrier for nursing, especially for new moms. Nursing in a ring sling allows mom to stay on the move, even with a frequently nursing newborn. It is very easy to nurse discretely in a sling, and the fabric of the tail provides an excellent drape for additional nursing coverage.

Getting Started: When you and your baby are first learning to nurse, the easiest way to learn to nurse in a carrier is with a ring sling. Try putting the sling on, very loosely. Then settle in a comfortable chair to get your baby latched on. (When I was first learning to nurse my daughter, I would lay the sling right on top of the nursing pillow.) Once baby is settled in and nursing, you can gently tighten the sling around the baby to support their body in the exact position you are already using to nurse. With very new babies, you will still want to support your baby's head to ensure a good latch, but at least the sling will give you one arm free and allow you to be up and around a bit more.

Just remember, when nursing a newborn in a sling, you want the fabric of the sling to be supportive, but it should never be so tight that the baby's nose is pressed into the breast itself. No matter how old you baby is, always stay aware of their position in the sling.

Cradle Position: With your baby in a cradle carry all you have to do is slightly loosen the sling while you latch baby on. After baby is settled in and nursing, you can tighten up the sling so that it is comfortable and supportive for you and your baby. You can position baby’s head either toward or away from the rings, although most people feel more comfortable starting with the head away from the rings. (The 'head away from the rings' variation is particularly useful for the more well-endowed among us.)

Hands-free nursing can be accomplished by decreasing the pouch depth to support baby’s body (pull the middle of the fabric through the rings), and tightening the outer rail to support baby’s head (pull on the edge of the fabric through the rings).

Upright Position: You can also nurse in an upright position in a ring sling. It is quick and easiest to be hands-free. It is great for fussy babies, babies with reflux, and babies that are dealing with a fast flow or over-active let down.

How to nurse your baby in a wrap

A stretchy wrap is one of my favorite carriers for newborns, because it makes it so easy to carry your baby with you all day. It is a wonderful way to soothe fussy babies to sleep, and nursing in them is a breeze. All you have to do is place the baby in a cradle position in one side of the wrap, and help them latch on. The wrap provides so much coverage that no one will ever know that your baby is nursing in there!

Moby Wrap provides excellent instructions for nursing in a wrap. This same position can be used with other stretchy wraps, such as the Gypsy Mama Bali Baby Stretch.

How to nurse your baby in a baby pouch

Nursing in a Pouch baby carrier is easy: all you have to do is pull up your shirt (or down if it's a low v-neck or tank) and pull down the back layer of the pouch. You can use the top layer of the sling for privacy.

More buxom Mamas may find it is easier to turn the baby around so that his or her her head is towards the lower (non-shoulder) side of the sling.

How to nurse your baby in a mei tai baby carrier

It is possible to nurse in your carrier when you wear your baby in the front carry (I do it often). If you are able, it may be possible to simply lift your breast up to baby. If not, you can untie your straps to lower baby down a bit (re-tying them) to allow her to nurse. When she is finished simply lift her up and retie the straps. You can also lower one of the shoulder straps to allow baby access to the breast in a more reclined position (you will need to support her with one arm). This is especially nice with a smaller baby.

How to nurse your baby in a structured (pack) baby carrier (Ergo, Beco)

Nursing in a structured baby carrier such as the Ergo or Beco is very easy. The technique you use would depend on the age of your baby.

Newborns:
With the BECOpod or Ergo Infant Insert, your baby can be worn in a reclining position (similar to the cradle position in a pouch or ring sling). You would put the baby in the carrier with both legs together to one side and the head toward the other side with the baby's bottom centered in the middle of the carrier.

Older babies and toddlers (4 months +)
With older babies (4 months old or so), it is even easier to nurse in a structured carrier. With the baby in a front carry, all you have to do is loosen the shoulder straps to lower the baby until their mouth is at the right level for nursing. Then, nurse. It's that easy! Some moms may need to support the breast with one hand for nursing. Once the baby is done, just tighten back up, and away you go

Baby Carrier Safety Tips

Baby Carrier Safety Tips. Potentially dangerous activities to avoid

Please exercise common sense when using your carrier and remember that you are the only one responsible for your baby's immediate safety!

BEWARE OF:

Using a carrier while in a moving vehicle of any kind (this includes airplanes).

Activities that will bounce or shake your child.

Loose fabric or ties. (You can tie the tail of the sling around the rings, or tuck excess fabric away so it doesn’t catch on anything.)

Drinking hot liquids while carrying your baby.

Hot cooking, especially with hot oil that may splatter.

Using sharp knives that a carried baby can inadvertently grab.

Lifting or moving heavy objects while carrying your baby.

Leaning over too far. (Always try to bend at the knees.)

Putting toys or other items in the carrier with your baby that could poke, choke, or otherwise harm your child.

Not protecting baby from the elements. (Remember to use sunscreen on your baby if you are going outside, or wind resistant fabric for cold winds.)

A good rule of thumb: If you are unsure about the safety of any activity DON’T DO IT! Nothing is worth putting your precious baby at risk.

Baby Carrier Injuries. Research On Babywearing Injuries

Baby Carrier Injuries. Research On Babywearing Injuries

Here is a summary of the information from research articles on injuries related to improper babywearing. Heed these lessons and we can help decrease the already low injury rate related to baby carriers.

Choose a safe carrier.

The number one cause of injury was due to faulty product design. It’s not enough to rely solely on a company’s reputation. Several big name manufacturers have recalled carriers because babies were injured due to faulty parts and/or design. Here are a few examples:

The Baby Bjorn Active carrier, which was just recently introduced and even pricier than the Original, was found to have a defective buckle. You can find out if your Bjorn was recalled on their website: http://www.babybjorn.com/. The company will replace the buckle for you, if requested.

Maya Wrap used 1/8 inch thick sling rings on some of their baby slings in 2001, which resulted in 20 reports of the rings breaking and one fall, with no reported injuries. These slings were recalled and the company now uses 1/4 inch thick sling rings exclusively. You can get more information regarding the recall and how to replace a recalled sling at: http://www.mayawrap.com/n_faq.php#recall

The lessons here are:

1. If you are buying a used carrier, make sure that it has not been recalled.
2. Even if your carrier hasn’t been recalled, be sure to check the condition of the carrier and all parts before each use.
3. Examine how your child fits in the carrier. Many smaller infants have slipped through leg holes or other gaps in carriers that are too large for a newborn or preemie. On the other hand, is your carrier strong enough to hold the weight of a larger baby or toddler? Most manufacturers have weight guidelines, but you still need to check how the carrier fits your specific child to gauge its true safety.

Second, check the condition of your carrier regularly.

The second major cause of injury was due to old, worn carriers.
I have already mentioned this, but it bears repeating: ALWAYS check the condition of your carrier before you use it!

Third, learn how to use your carrier.

The third major cause of carrier injury was improper usage. You are taking a necessary precaution by reading your carrier instructions and The Thriving Babies Manual to help you learn how to use your carrier safely. Section Two below outlines some helpful safety tips. But always keep in mind that YOU alone are responsible for the safety of your child. Please exercise common sense when using any baby carrier. Your knowledge, prudence and awareness are your child’s best defense against injury!

Fourth, be sure your baby can breathe properly.

One study also raised the issue of adequate ventilation. Always be sure your baby can breathe and that your carrier allows for good air circulation. Certain carriers are made in fabric that is more breathable, such as Solarveil, or authentic rebozos. If you live in a hot climate, these breathable carriers may be especially comfortable for you and your baby.

Pre-term (and special needs) babies are particularly sensitive to inadequate ventilation because their lungs are so immature. If you aren’t sure if your baby is getting enough oxygen in the carrier, don’t do it and/or seek medical counsel. The effects of oxygen deprivation can be debilitating and permanent, so always be sure your child can breathe properly. (This is also one HUGE reason why you should NEVER let a newborn cry it out alone.)

Stay Current on Baby Carrier Recalls

Stay Current on Baby Carrier Recalls

In an effort to better inform parents about the latest child product safety information, the US government has simplified communications between multitudes of agencies charged with consumer product safety. One major step forward has been the creation of a one-stop website for parents shopping for information about product safety: www.recalls.gov.

In the past many common child-related items, including baby carriers, have been subject to recall. Unfortunately, not all parents are aware of the latest safety information, and the baby carrier you buy today could face a safety issue tomorrow.

Recalls: No Guarantee of Safety

When the government determines a baby carrier could be defective or dangerous for any reason, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) can order the manufacturer to stop selling the questionable product and pull existing inventory from store shelves. But it is essential for parents to understand that even if a product is recalled, the responsibility for removing that item from the home or childcare center falls largely to the consumer. The danger remains, too, that recalled products may still be sold at home garage sales or in stores dealing in secondhand merchandise. In other words, to be certain your baby carrier is safe, parents must do some homework.

Being Prepared Means Being Current

The good news is that the government has made it easy to keep up to date on baby carrier safety bulletins as well as research past recalls. Parents can receive automatic notification of baby product safety recalls simply by calling the CPSC and requesting to be added to their mailing list. Their phone number is 800-638-CPSC. You can also sign up online at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp. Remember to urge any friends and family members who may have occasion to care for your child to take a safety inventory of the baby carriers they own.

Tips to Ensure Baby Carrier Safety

Always complete and send in registration cards that accompany purchases. Manufacturers cant notify you of possible safety issues unless they have your contact information

Search for specific baby carrier safety information by product type at http://www.cpsc.gov/cgi-bin/recalldb/prod.asp.

Search for specific baby carrier safety information by manufacturer at http://www.cpsc.gov/cgi-bin/recalldb/firm.asp.

Check for recent recalls at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html.

Remember to use these sites to find info before buying a second-hand product as well as learning about products you already own.

Baby Wraps For Summer Top Picks for Summertime Babywearing

Baby Wraps For Summer. Top Picks for Summertime Babywearing

Our Top Picks for Summertime Babywearing

For a lot of people, Memorial Day marks the official start of summer. This means vacations, more time spend outside, and fun at the pool or the beach. Wherever your summer plans take you, we have some great options for cool and comfortable babywearing to get you through even the hottest days.

Here are our top picks for carriers for all of your summertime babywearing needs:

All-Around Summertime Carriers: Solarveil Fabrics

One of my favorite fabrics for summertime babywearing is solarveil. This is a specially woven mesh fabric that is very breathable, dries quickly, and has built-in sun protection (double layered solarveil blocks 90-95 of the UV rays). Because it dries so quickly, it is a popular choice for wearing in the pool or at the beach. A lot of people like it as an all around summer carrier, too, because the mesh fabric is so lightweight and breathable, and because it provides such great sun protection.

If you are a pouch fan, make sure to check out the solarveil pouches from Hotslings. This year’s Hotslings pouches come in 3 delicious colors: khaki, sky blue, and pink.

Zolowear also makes ring slings from the solarveil fabric. These are one of my favorite summertime slings, particularly for tiny babies. It’s a cool and lightweight sling, and the tail of the sling can be draped over the baby as an extra sunshade or nursing cover-up. The tails also have a handy built-in pocket.

Solarveil Mei tais from Sachi Carriers. Since mei tais are two-shouldered carriers, they distribute the weight of the baby very well, and can be comfortable for longer wearing. The Sachi solarvei mei tais also come with a roomy hood, to keep the sun off baby’s head.

In the Water

Swimming pools are finally open and the beaches are beckoning. We have a lot of different baby carrier options that allow you to take your baby right into the water with you. Solarveil mesh pouches, mei tais and slings dry quickly and provide some extra sun protection (in, and out of the water. We also have mei tais from a fabric called solarweave. This is a smoother fabric than solarveil (not unlike nice men’s swim trunks), which has sunscreen woven into the fabric. It’s not as breathable as the solarveil, but a lot of parents like the softer texture of the fabric. Finally, for the wrap fans, the Gypsy Mama water wrap is a must-have for the beach, shower, or pool.

Sun Protection

If you plan on spending any time outside with your baby, you know that sun protection is critical (particularly for babies under 6 months old who are too young for sunscreen). Slings and baby carriers constructed from solarveil fabric let you enjoy the summer sun while protecting your child from its harmful rays.

We also have an innovative new product that is perfect wherever the summer days take you. Whether your child is traveling in a car seat, stroller or soft baby carrier, the Peekaru Ozone's pattented Solarveil fabric blocks 70-80% of UVA and UVB rays.

The Ozone lets you and your child comfortably and safely enjoy warm sunny days, by letting the cool breeze in while keeping the sun's harmful rays out. Take your baby outside with confidence and enjoy the sunny summer weather, and end those blanket-tucking frustrations forever.

New Native Baby Carrier Testimonials

I am now purchasing two more of these New Native Baby Carrier for friends of mine who are expecting soon. I want to share this with them. I will also be ordering more when we adopt our second baby, who will be a newborn. I'd like to have two or three on hand, so that I can wash them frequently and maybe coordinate with my clothes (embarrassing confession). Thanks for offering so many choices at such fair prices!" Kristin

Just wanted to let you know how much I love and enjoy the Native Baby Carrier. I actually own 2 other baby carriers and haven't worn them once since your sling arrived. Very prompt delivery by the way thanks a lot. I absolutely LOVE the carrier and so does my little Mia. She's 7 weeks now and I carry her in the Native Carrier every day since it got here. I also have a 3 year old and we go to dance class and I really, really needed something my baby thinks is so comfy that she will happily sleep in it and won't fuss. The carrier is just great, she goes to sleep in it in a second and seems completely happy and content until the next nursing. I have even put her in the car seat with the carrier so she didn't have to wake up - it works like a charm. It doesn't hurt my back either and really folds up to a tiny package in my diaper bag. Well I could go on for hours and I have already recommended it to many of my friends, who will contact you in the near future to buy one as well. Thanks again and I will definitely check out your web page for more on a regular basis."
Bettina mother of Mia (7 weeks old)

"I received my New Native baby carrier a few weeks ago. We have only had the chance to use it a few times, but I love it. My 7.5 month old son loves to be carried around in it, and will fall asleep in it. I love how versatile it is. I'm so glad I purchased this product, instead of spending twice as much for something that would have only been a hip carrier and may not have been as good to our backs. Thank you so much!" Kelly, Parker CO

"I received my New Native Carriers today and have already washed and used them. I took a picture of my son already enjoying the Carrier while I typed a "twins update" email to all my friends and family. Thanks again for everything! You apparently hold yourself to a high level of service."
Lacey R., proud stay-at-home mom of twins

"Thank you for sending the New Native Carrier as quickly as you did, it was impressive! I love this sling, and my 4 month old, 17 pound son loves it too. We even took a 1.5 mile walk in it yesterday, it was great. . . This carrier is the most comfortable sling that I have used, and I tried quite a few. Thank you again." Catherine, Warren, New Jersey

"I received my sling yesterday (wow, that was quick) and absolutely love it. I washed it and it fits perfectly. My baby and I both love it. Thank you so much for such a great transaction!
Thanks again, Katherine

I had to buy another sling from you. I went to Chick E. Cheese, and apparently left it there. I went back, but it wasn't there. So, I guess someone else is enjoying it now (or at least they better be!). I just wanted to tell you that it was awesome at Chuck E. Cheese. My 3 yr old was scared to go in the tubes, so I put my 8wk old in the sling and went up with her. The sling worked great in the crawling position. It safely cradled my baby, and gently swung back and forth under me. She loved it! She felt completely safe and seemed to enjoy seeing the different colors of the tubes and swinging. I'm so glad I'm able to play with my 3 yr old and still have my baby with me! My 3 yr old hasn't been jealous of her at all and I think it's because I can still play with her while the baby is in the sling. Just thought I'd share...I didn't know if you have ever heard of anyone using the sling in that position before, but it worked great!
Cindy

We recently bought this sling from you, actually got it yesterday in the mail and my daughter Sydney loves it already. Thanks for the great item.
Jennifer

Hi. My family just returned from a week at Ocean City, MD. I carried Luke, my 10 month old son, around in the sling whenever we went to the park, boardwalk or dinner. People everywhere commented on how neat the sling is and many asked where they could purchase one for themselves! I happily referred them all to your website. Both of my parents came along and wore the sling with Luke also. They were really amazed at how comfortable it is to wear. My dad especially suffers from severe back pain because of his profession. He was able to wear Luke for hours without any discomfort.
God Bless, Angie in PA

I received the sling yesterday and have already washed it and am trying it out. It is working wonderfully for my 6 month old who is currently teething and doesn't want to be separated from me. In fact, he is in it right now, allowing me to type to you! I have researched a lot of carriers and this one is simple and so far seems to work very well. Thank you for your quick response in getting this shipped to me.
Thanks again! Amy

Thank you so much for your wonderful service. I received the sling today. It is amazing and I love it -- I have a sleeping four week old comfortably resting on me but two free arms! This sling is amazing because unlike the baby carrier I had I feel like she is secure (with the other baby carrier I still felt like I needed to support her - thus defeating the purpose).
Thank you again, Rebecca M.

I got my sling yesterday and I am really loving it because it feels SOOO much better on my back, neck, and shoulders than the previous sling I was using. And I love that it is so compact! Thank you so much, I have already been referring my friends to your website because I cannot stop talking about it! Your fellow mom for life, Diana, mother of 6-week old Charlton

New Native Baby Carrier. Why The new Native Baby Carrier Is Different

New Native Baby Carrier

What makes this New Native Baby Carrier baby carrier different from many others on the market?

* Traveling with your baby is convenient. This carrier is unique in that its design is non-bulky, portable and easy to use. Slide the carrier around your torso, and your baby slips in or out in seconds--no need to tie, buckle, or adjust. When you are finished using the carrier it can be easily folded up and takes up a SMALL amount of room in your purse or diaper bag--or you can even just keep it on!

* Secure. The shape of this sling has a built in curve that keeps your baby secure without you holding on.

* Cooler. Many other carriers are like quilts with extra padding or fabric. This can become very hot. This carrier does not have any extra fabric or padding—less is more!

* Versatile. Due to the simplicity of this carrier, it can be used in many positions and worn comfortably for longer periods of time. Carry your baby on your front, side or back. After four months of age, your baby can ride in many positions including straddling your hip. You can also use this sling to carry twins or for pets! The detailed instructions that come with your sling provide all the information you will need on the various carrying positions.

* High Quality. The 100% cotton fabric used for this sling was selected for durability and each product is constructed to last through many babies. Every sling is handcrafted to professional standards by mothers working in their homes and inspected for quality.

* Ideal Support for newborns. This carrier supports your babies’ spine in the fetal position. This is ideal until your baby can sit up (weight on the tailbone before that time can cause spine problems). Babies can see their parents face and look out into the world.

* Gentle on your back and shoulders. Endorsed by chiropractors, this carrier provides broad weight distribution from your shoulder to your hips and aligns your baby’s center of gravity as close to your body as possible. There are no buckles, belts, clips or rings to pinch or rub you. The wide shoulder strap will not dig or cut, as narrow straps do.

* Bonding. Because this carrier is so convenient and easy to use, you spend more time in close physical contact with your baby. This loving contact fosters parent-child bonding and promotes happy, health child development.

* Privacy for nursing. The ample fabric allows for comfortable and private nursing at home or out in public.

* Recommended. Doctors, nurses, birth educators, midwives, chiropractor, doulas, lactation consultants and parents themselves love and endorse this product!

How To Wear A Mei Tie Baby Wrap Carrier Video

How To Wear A Mei Tie Baby Wrap Carrier Video

Front Carry
1. Tie the waist straps around your waist snugly, and secure with a double square knot so that the inside of the carrier faces out, and the panel of the carrier is down the front of your legs

2. Hold your child so that they almost sit on your belly. Newborns can have their legs tucked in froggy style.

3. Pull the carrier up over your childs back, placing a strap over each shoulder.

4. Place a hand on the child to support them while you bring one strap down over your back and around to the front again.

5. While maintaining the tension on this strap, use your other hand (there should be enough tension to hold the child in the carrier. If you are not comfortable with this get a spotter or someone to help you tie!) to repeat the same procedure with the second strap.

Back Carry (from seated position)
1. Spread the carrier out on the couch or a big living room chair so that the waist straps com off to the sides, and the back straps go up the curve of the chair.

2. Place the child in the center of the wrap, and tie the waist strap on snugly (Alternately, you can tie the waist strap and then place the child.)

3. Reach back and grab both shoulder straps from the couch while pulling them up and over your back, and the child close to you. You can cross the straps across your chest in an X or just over your shoulders like a backpack.

4. Tie your straps snugly together under the child's bottom, or across their back.

Back Carry (from standing position)

1. Tie the waist straps around your waist snugly, and secure with a double square knot so that the inside of the carrier faces out, and the panel of the carrier is down the back of your legs.

2. Older children can be put on your back from squatting and telling them to hold like a piggy back (Shown). Younger children can be lifted on to your back by a spotter, or for the more advanced, simply lean forward and place the child on your own back.

3. Reach down (Carefully! A handy tip is to tuck the long straps into your waist band for ease of grabbing) and pull the carrier up between the legs of the child, and over their backs.

4. Still bent slightly forward, pull the straps up over your shoulders, crossing at your chest (or backpack style) and tying under the child's bottom. Some find it more secure to go under the child's knee before tying under their bottom.

5.Older children will like their arms out while sleeping children can have them tucked in.

6. You can cross the straps like an X across your back, or just over your shoulders like a backpack.

7. Bring these straps together either under the child's bum or across their backs and tie again snugly with a double square knot.

8. Older Children may like their arms out. Newborns should have the panel fully up their backs so it supports their heads.

Plus Size Baby Carrier, Wraps, Slings Reviews

Babywearing for Plus-size People

When I was pregnant with my youngest child, I began to read about attachment parenting. This style of parenting meshed so wonderfully with my formal child development education as well, as my feelings about my children and family life in general, that I knew immediately that my baby would be attachment parented. I don’t care for the experience of pregnancy at all, but I just love caring for and nursing a new baby. What a joy it was to make a decision to parent in a way that would allow my baby and me to stay close to each other as much as we wanted!

Click here to see a breakdown of different baby carriers, slings and wraps for plus size baby earing

Also a joy was the realization that attachment parenting is an inexpensive way to parent. My second youngest child was 7 when my youngest was born, so our baby equipment was long gone, given to various friends or destroyed by active children over the years. My shopping list for the new baby was very short: car seat, diapers and covers, clothes, fingernail clippers, and a babycarrier. Simple, right? I hadn’t counted on the difficulties I would encounter finding a babycarrier that would work for me! I am a large woman.

At that time, I owned a babycarrier that I’d been using occasionally with babies in my in-home daycare service. It was a widely available front/back carrier that I picked up at a discount store. It fit fine; the waist belt would have fit a person larger than I (well, before pregnancy, anyway!). I couldn’t stand to wear it longer than half an hour, though, and never with a baby larger than about 15 pounds. Sure, it came in handy if a baby needed to be held when I had to prepare lunch for the older kids, but I would never consider wearing it frequently nor for very long. And I would never consider wearing that carrier in public! Let’s face it; as a woman of significant size, I can think of more attractive things to wear than a tight belt around the outside of my shirt! The belt seemed to function as something intended to accentuate all of my squishy parts as much as anything else. The carrier obviously was not going to work as something in which to carry my baby for many hours a day. Thus began my research into the world of baby carriers and slings.

Why is babywearing different for plus-size people?

Since my son’s birth (July 24, 2002), I have owned some 35 slings and carriers, helped dozens of parents learn to use slings, including many plus-size parents, and finally opened an e-store specializing in slings and carriers This article addresses other parents like me. If you are a size 20 (or thereabouts) or smaller, you will probably be able to use slings and carriers in standard large sizes without a problem. However, if you are larger, there are some special considerations you may want address before you begin to buy. The following discussion is based on my own sling use and that of others I have spoken to or worked with. Please note that I will always be careful to use words like most, many, and other qualifiers when talking about how a given sling style works for larger parents. There is no "best" sling for all parents, whatever their size. What is a positive about a sling for one person may be a negative for another. Most sling retailers on-line will accept returns or make exchanges, so don’t be afraid to try a few carriers before deciding which one is the one for you!

Most slings available today come in larger sizes. I am thrilled that this is so, but as we all know, just making things bigger is only part of what we need. Who among us has not gone to try on a new shirt and found that, although it fit well everywhere else, the neck hole was huge, or the breast pocket was much too far to the left? Just making everything bigger doesn’t always work! Our proportions are often very different from those of our smaller friends. We also wear more natural insulation, so many of us tend to be warmer than others, making the weight and padding of a sling an important consideration. Digging and pinching are also bigger problems for us because we are softer all over.

Baby K'tan Carrier vs. Moby Wrap Baby Carrier

Baby K'tan Carrier vs. Moby Wrap Baby Carrier. Both Great for Moms, Dads, Plus Size and Breastfeeding

What is the difference between the Baby K'tan vs. Moby Wrap:
-the both offer good back support since it goes over each shoulder
-The BabyK'tan is quicker to put on that the Moby Wrap
-They both offer many positions to carry the baby in
-The Baby K'tan cannot likely be used by several people since it must be sized to the person wearing it.

Overall I really like them both. I have worn the Moby Wrap on a few trips that we have taken to Disneyland where I was using it for several hours straight and found it to be very comfortable. I also like The Baby K'tan really well and think it is nice that it is a little quicker/easier to put on (especially outside).

Native Baby Carrier vs. The Peanut Shell Baby Carrier

Native Baby Carrier vs. The Peanut Shell Baby Carrier

Common features of both baby carriers
They are non bulky and can easily be stored in a diaper bag. They are quick to put on and easy to use. They are both versatile and can carry your baby in a variety of positions including: Newborn Carry, Hip Carry, Kangaroo Carry, and Back Carry. Both can be used to carry newborns through 35 pound toddlers. Super simple, sleek design. No zippers, no rings no fuss. These slings are sized to the person wearing it for the most optimal comfort and fit but cannot usually be shared with both Mom and Dad.

The main difference between these two baby carriers is in the fabric choices which is a personal preference choice usually. The Peanut Shell also has a pocket, the New Native does not. They both have a toy loop. Most of The Peanut Shell styles also have a little padding on the edge of the carrier so that when your little one is in a hip carry or tummy 2 tummy position (with legs out) they are more comfortable

Rockin' Baby Sling Baby Carrier For Mom and Dad

This Sling baby carrier is great for moms and dads. It is light weight for summer use and hot weather and wonderful for breastfeeding privacy

Rockin' Baby Slings are a fashionable, hip accessory that you can safely and comfortably wear your baby in. They are available in a variety of linen and vintage fabrics in an assortment of beautiful colors with unique trim. Rockin' Baby Slings are easy to use once you learn how to thread the sling through the rings, and how it adjusts, and how to place your baby in the sling comfortably and securely. The Rockin' Baby Sling can be left threaded and just be put on or off by slipping it over your head. The front and back rails of the pouch can be adjusted independently creating a perfect, customized fit for your baby. The sling is very safe and secure - you just need to become comfortable using it. It is made from a single piece of pre-washed, natural fiber, breathable, durable fabric with nickel-plated steel rings. Once the sling is threaded properly through the rings it will not come undone.

The Rockin' Baby Sling fits both mom and dad. The sling will adjust for both the size of the wearer and the size of the baby.

The tail is excellent as privacy when breastfeeding, to shield your baby from the sun (or unexpected rain) and as a blanket.

The sling has a pocket in it that is great for keys, diaper, pacifier and cell phone.

The Rockin' Baby Sling is not bulky and easily fits in your diaper bag. It's lack of bulk and padding is also perfect for warm weather.

This Baby Sling is a great tool for putting baby to sleep. Putting baby in the sling and walking around gently lulls baby to sleep. You can just lean over the bed until baby is lying down, then slip the sling over your head, leaving it over baby as a blanket.

Babies want to be held, but parents often need their hands. Rockin' Baby Sling is the perfect solution - and it is great looking -- hipster parents say "hooray"!

The Rockin' Baby Sling is usable from the time of your baby's birth, until he or she is a 35 pound toddler.

All slings are made of 100% cotton linen, cotton twill, cotton poplin, or cotton voile. Rockin' Baby Slings are conceived and manufactured in Los Angeles, California, USA.

It is incredibly versatile. You can nurse your baby in the sling, wear baby to sleep, work in the home or office or go out and about with baby - for a walk, traveling out of town, to the supermarket, out to dinner, social gatherings - most people probably won't realize there is a baby in there. As baby gets older and bigger, you can change the carrying position to match baby's development. There are a variety of front carries where baby can sleep, nurse or just hang out, as well as hip carries and a back carrying position.

I tried to use a more expensive carrier but this carrier was reasonably priced. Plus, easier to put the child into by myself. I think this carrier is perfect for me, however, I wish the material was a little more breathable for the baby.

This was a wonderful sling for my child when she was a newborn. It kept her snug and warm and she was very secure. There are a few months where I couldn't use it. Between 2-4 months she wanted to look around but couldn't support herself so sticking her in it for the hip carrier wasn't really possible. Outside of that, I LOVE this product. Very durable and easy to take anywhere.

Best Dad Baby Carriers. Premaxx Baby-Bag A Great Daddy Sling

Best Dad Baby Carriers. Premaxx Baby-Bag A Great Daddy Sling

Premaxx Baby-Bag New Edition Baby Carrier

Pros
Safe, secure, comfortable for baby and wearer, good looking

Cons
Not adjustable enough for smaller men, or probably most women

The Bottom Line
An excellent sling-style baby carrier that's perfect for daddy's -- easy to use, comfortable, good looking. Baby and dad will both love it.

I've used this sling with my son since he came home from the hospital -- nine weeks now. I take him for a daily three-mile walk, and frequent trips to the grocery and department stores.

That said, I haven't encountered many of the problems raised by some of the negative posters here. I find this product easy to use and have absolutely no safety concerns about it. My son loves riding in it, and is almost instantly asleep as soon as I start walking. No troubles getting him in or out. I find it to be very comfortable, even for long periods of time. The outer pockets are nice, too -- but only for keys or your cell phone (and maybe one emergency diaper!).

To me it seems that many of the negative opinions here may stem from failure to wear/use this sling properly (e.g., the sling does have to be adjusted correctly before first use; as a matter of practice, the main body of the sling needs to be positioned on the "ball" of your shoulder, hanging across your chest fairly high up; and per the instructions, the cords which adjust the sling's opening do have to be tied to guarantee that the adjustment sliders can't give under weight).

I'll grant, however, that this is not the sling for most women and smaller framed men (I'm 5' 11' with a fairly large build and, to wear it correctly as shown in the instructions, I have this sling adjusted about as small as it can go!).

Can't vouch for how it'll work as a hip hammock, but as a baby carrier I feel it's been worth every penny so far. The ability to go for walks around the neighborhood, go shopping, etc. with my son and keep my hands free at the same time has been a real joy.

And I do get favorable comments on its looks from those who realize it's a baby carrier. Most people just assume it's a messenger bag of some sort (I've even been asked to "please check your bag, sir" when entering some stores until I show them that I've got a baby on board!)

Sizing Guidelines for the BabyHawk Mei Tai
BabyHawk Mei Tai baby carriers are a one-size fits most carrier. The newest version of the BabyHawk Mei Tai includes a headrest. This is ideal for an infant that requires extra head support, as well as for an older baby that likes to fall asleep inside the baby carrier. This size Mei Tai can do it all! This is an ideal size as you can use this baby carrier with a newborn or toddler. A newborn or young baby without complete neck control will have ample head support, while an older baby can easily see out over the top of the carrier and even has his hands free, if they prefer. Just turn down the headrest for a baby that wants to see out and about.
